The Office of International Affairs (KUI) Muhammadiyah University Jakarta collaborated with the Social Welfare Study Program (Kessos) Faculty of Social and Political Sciences to hold an international seminar with the theme " Lessons From Pandemic: Health for democracy and Implications for Social Work" . This seminar was held in a hybrid manner at the Kasman Singodimedjo Auditorium, Tuesday (17/10/23).

This seminar was held in order to develop cooperation at an international level by presenting Prof. Dr. Paul Duongtran from the Department of Social Work College of Health, Human Services, and Nursing at California State University as the keynote speaker. The seminar was attended by students, lecturers, and the FISIP UMJ academic community and moderated by the FISIP UMJ Social Welfare Lecturer, Wa Ode Asmawati, M.Si.
In his presentation, Paul Doungtran discussed the transition period in the world of education, from the normal era to the pandemic era. At that time students and teachers had to learn online and this triggered mental health problems.
Paul explained that health problems arise among Indonesian people who live on many islands and find it difficult to get internet access. What's more, many do not have good enough devices, which hinders the teaching and learning process. Of course things like that can disrupt people's mental health.
Another thing he highlighted was that there were some people who did not believe in the existence of a pandemic. They think the pandemic is just a hoax. Of course, this fact makes the pandemic even more difficult to handle medically and even has an impact on the mental health of medical personnel.
“The lack of attention or appreciation for the frontliners makes them lack self-confidence. However, they still have to do their job," said Paul.
Paul added that mental health needs were not met during the pandemic. This situation was further exacerbated by the decline in the economic situation of society due to the pandemic. People experience worry, declining finances, health problems, rising divorce rates, loss of quality of life, and also a decline in mental health for workers and their families.
On that occasion, Paul also expressed his hope of continuing to collaborate with UMJ, which he said had the opportunity to host an international conference on mental health in 2025.
Head of Social Welfare Study Program Muhammad Sahrul, M.Sc., explained that the International Seminar was intended to develop global insight for students and lecturers regarding post-pandemic social issues.
Previously, when giving a speech, the Chairman of KUI UMJ, Endang Zakaria, hoped that this international seminar could trigger collaboration with other international universities.
"UMJ is developing collaboration not only at the Asia and ASEAN level, but also with other international campuses, one of which is America," said Endang.
The seminar, which was attended by hundreds of participants, both online and offline, ended with a question and answer session and discussion about international collaboration between UMJ and California State University.
